Couldn't find package synaptic

Howdy All!

As an alternative to up2date, I am trying apt and synaptic. I followed the instructions here:
http://freshrpms.net/apt/

Here is the result of my install process

root - /home/robertmarkbram/apt
$apt-get update && apt-get install synaptic
Get:1 http://ftp.monash.edu.au redhat-9-i386/redhat release [457B]
Get:2 http://ftp.monash.edu.au redhat-updates-9/redhat release [464B]
Fetched 921B in 0s (1948B/s)
Hit http://ftp.monash.edu.au redhat-9-i386/redhat/os pkglist
Hit http://ftp.monash.edu.au redhat-9-i386/redhat/os release
Get:1 http://ftp.monash.edu.au redhat-updates-9/redhat/os pkglist [339kB]
Hit http://ftp.monash.edu.au redhat-updates-9/redhat/os release

E: Couldn't find package synaptic

Does this mean it failed a network lookup?
Any clues would be much appreciated!
