compiling distro from source? general questions
I am almost done building my amd64 system -
Amd64 3000+ venice core ThermalTake Sonic Tower (fanless cpu cooler) Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe 2gb pc400 cl2.5 2x WD 36gb Raptor 80gb 7200rpm IDE 16x NEC 3540a ThermalTake 480watt PSU Video card/monitor not yet selected.(thinking 7800gt(x maybe, will be nvidia) and dell 2005fpw) OK, here is my question... I am going to have to do some patches and such to my kernel and such. SO, I was thinking, before I actually install it, to possibly dl the distro source and go from there? But I am totally unfamiliar with that process... Do I install from binary, and THEN install from source that I modified? or do i configure all the sources I want, compile it, burn it on dvd and then install it? Any links and or info is greatly appreciated... Thanks, Martin Seidl |
oh yeah, I will be using Fedora core 4

Depending on how many sources you want to hand-tune/compile, one way or the other might be better.
If it's a few (kernel + a bit more), install the distro binaries, then the few home-built programs from there--preferable the $DISTRO way (for debian, apt-get --help | grep build). If you want to compile *a lot*, I'd say go for a source-based distro--being meant for (whatever) usually makes it easier to do (whatever). The name Gentoo springs to mind. hth --Jonas |
Howzit
well u can always start with the minimal install which is around 400 Mb and this has almost the bare bones and most of the times u can add to the system what u want instead installing a hole bunch of stuff that u do not need. But if u want something more specific for your system and customized for your system then go for Gentoo Linux. cheers |
