that is normal RHEL/CentOS/Fedora/OpenSUSE behavior

the auto update manager is looking
while it is doing so yum will not work

what version did you install ?
-- from the ARSC mirror
http://mirrors.arsc.edu/centos/6.4/isos/x86_64/

"CentOS-6.4-x86_64-bin-DVD1.iso" is standard
the DVD2 is not normally needed for a everyday install
or the Min. CD image
"CentOS-6.4-x86_64-minimal.iso "

boot the machine
wait about 10 to 15 Minutes
then run
Code:
su -
yum update
the yum and rpm databases are being built by the package manager
this might take some time if servers are a bit overloaded or you have a slow connection

I am new to centos.
I installed the centos 6.3 LiveDVD on my HDD,
encountered a few problems:
1)It does not mount ntfs drive, how to enable it?
2)I do not see "language and region" in Administration pulldown folder, I want to install more chinese fonts, how to do it?
3) How to play MP3 and DVD? What packages to install?

THANKS.

a few things with centos
when a new version comes out the old repos are moved to the historical vault

the 6.3 repos are no longer there ( some might be for a while)

the live cd ( under 600 meg )
is missing a lot of things that are on the dvd

with the dvd install ntfs-3g is auto installed
--- upgrade to 6.4 then see:
http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks...ght=%28ntfs%29

what you can do is "upgrade" to 6.4

Code:
su -
yum --releaseserver=6.4 upgrade
then wait and reboot when it is done
Quote:
How to play MP3 and DVD? What packages to install?
upgrade to 6.4 first
then install and configure yum-priorities
http://wiki.centos.org/PackageManagement/Yum/Priorities
then install the 6.4 elrepo and rpmforge
see the wiki
http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories

now cent dose not really document music and video support
you can transpose the fedora 18 mjmwired page for cent
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mj...l#mediaplayers
the basics are the same
just the repos are different
rpmforge and elrepo are used in cent

For your requirements you need extra repositories. EPEL and ATRpms. Some people prefer RPMForge for multimedia, but i prefer ATRpms as they have latest packages. in any case you should either go for RPMForge or ATRpms. not both/mixed.

As superuser do following:

0a)
# rpm -Uvh http://download.fedoraproject.org/pu...6-8.noarch.rpm
# vi /etc/yum.repos.d/epel.repo
Under [epel] section change to enabled=0.

0b)
# vi /etc/yum.repos.d/atrpms.repo
Add the following lines:
[atrpms]
name=Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch - ATrpms
baseurl=http://dl.atrpms.net/el$releasever-$basearch/atrpms/stable
gpgkey=http://ATrpms.net/RPM-GPG-KEY.atrpms
gpgcheck=1
enabled=0

1)
# yum install ntfs-3g --enablerepo=epel
# mkdir -p /mnt/songs
# mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda2 /mnt/songs (replace device and folder accordingly)
# echo "/dev/sda2 /mnt/songs ntfs-3g auto,users,uid=0,gid=500,umask=000,rw 0 0" >> /etc/fstab (where gid=500 is group id of user)

2)
Administration->Add/Remove Software = Languages->Chinese Support

3)
# yum install ffmpeg libdvdcss libdvdread libdvdnav libdvdplay lsdvd mplayer --enablerepo=atrpms
# yum install gstreamer gstreamer-plugins-base gstreamer-plugins-good gstreamer-plugins-bad-free --enablerepo=atrpms
# yum install gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-ugly gstreamer-ffmpeg --enablerepo=atrpms
# yum install smplayer --enablerepo=atrpms
# yum install vlc --enablerepo=atrpms

Hope its helpful

Thumbs up

From what i see, its just so simple, just like chocolate...

just copy and paste. its just 1-time job.

Remember CentOS is meant for server not desktop. so you have to go out-of-the box.

learn "vi"
or use the rather easy text editor
For Gnome2 use "gedit"
For the terminal use "nano"

also you have the install media ( the dvd) repo turned on
this is normally turned off , by default .
and should normally never be in the /etc/yum.d.repo/ folder

you might want to read the centos wiki on installing 3d party repos
http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories
this explains how to install the repos

For the c6-media repo, edit the file and set 'enabled=0'; its trying to read from the CD/DVD drive, which you don't need if you've got the internet working.

From the GUI menus it should be:
System -> Admin -> Add/Remove SW -> System -> Software Sources.
