Centos 5 Init 5 not loading GUI

This is a new intall of Centos 5 on a new machine. When the system starts in init level 5 a text based login appears. The who -r commands tells me that this is level 5. Login works but remains in command mode. Trying startx fails indicating that the X is already running and then hangs.

If I modify inittab and boot into level 3, after logginf in I can type startx, the X starts just fine.

From init 3 prompt, I type init 5 and the graphic login screen comes up and the system works just fine.

How can I correct this so that the system starts with a graphic login screen when it boot in to init level 5? I have a feeling that either the graphic card is not initializing properly at boot. Any ideas on what to look for would be helpful.

More information
The system has an ATI video controller, ES1000.

Thumbs up Problem fixed

I loaded the ati driver for the Rage XL which I read was what ES1000 replaced and the server is now happy and will boot into a graphic login for init 5.
