A corrupt package in the EL 5 repo ?
.. and you are quite sure of the 'i386' for RHEL 5.4 x86_64 ?

Other links to the package .. for manual install
SL 54 http://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux...6.el5.i386.rpm

CentOS54 http://mirror.centos.org/centos/5.4/...6.el5.i386.rpm

One out of 1000 ? times yum / rpm makes some error and
installing the package with # rpm -Uvh <package.rpm>
is the solution.
Also please take care that rpm is the latest update =
' rpm-4.4.2.3-18.el5 '
.....
