Ok, if you are logged in as your normal user account, lets say it is called 'walt' for instance. Open up a terminal window (it is in your hat menu). Type su - then type in your root password which you would have setup during the installation. You can now from the promt run... gedit /etc/inittab you'll be able to change the entry from 5 to 3 now.
Another way, when you first boot up your machine and it gets you to the login window. Instead of typing your normal user account, type root as the username, and the password that you set during installation.
