can not open display on RHES 4.5?

I cannot run xterm or xclock on RHES 4.5.

The error message is "can not open display".

I have tried "xhost" + "export DISPLAY=:0.0", or "export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0"; but no help.

How to fix it?

I can start Xserver, I am on Gnome.
I typed and run "xclock" in a command terminal, it would show the error.
