Can anyone give me a simple no-nonsense guide to installing source programs?

Hey all

I am a total Linux noob (I installed Red Hat 9 about four days ago) and so this question will be really obvious to the rest of you.

I want to know how to compile source programs on Red Hat Linux 9. I've been trawling the web for ages now and am only slightly nearer to understanding what to do.

My main question is how to bring up the console thingy where you type "./config" and stuff like that. Hopefully once I know that, I'll be well on my way.

So anyone who is prepared to briefly tell me how to install a source program will be gretly appreciated!

Thanks a lot
