Can't install RedHat 9

When I boot from the install CD it says

VFS: Cannot open root device "" or 48:05
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 48:05

What's going on??

Is your harddrive connected properly? I got the very same error once when I forgot to connect my IDE cable.

I've had problems writing Linux/Unix OS's to disc with NERO which always says it's successful even if it's not. The best way to tell is to check the size of whatever is finally written to the disc compared to what is supposed to be there.

For example, let's say RH 9 is supposed to be 1G in size. You write it to disc using NERO, but make sure when you are done to bring up the disc and look at the properties of the file(s) you wrote. Make sure the file sizes are the same.

Just an idea, but sometimes that is the problem.

Good luck!

i d/loaded rh9 and burnt the cd`s a couple of times which i thought were successful, tried installing and got `so far` with them b4 they didn`t work. my advice to u is go to ebay and buy the discs for a couple of quid/dollars save ureselves a lot of time an effort then....`rawrite` a boot up disk.(u can get help off the web if unsure) u will find installing with any of the `up-to-date-` linux os is simple and user friendly and there are plenty of forums and websites that will help with ur hardware probs should u have any.

Lightbulb

I had this problem earlier. I went back to XP to format my Linux partition to an EXT2 Linux partition, booted back up into Red hat and it worked fine. Good luck!
