Blank Screen at login?

OK, I just got this used monitor for a my linux testing box (an old HP pavilon) and I turned it on, and it went through the normal boot sequece with all the little test things and none of them said [FAILED].
Well, as soon as I get through that, and the screen says FOREZT LOGIN: at the top, it would normally go into the graphical login screen with my other monitor, but with this, it just makes the monitor go blank and then I waited a few minutes and still, nothing.

Please help?

The X-Windows settings are probably beyond capbility of this monitor.
Hit CTRL+ALT+F1 and then login as root.

Type "init 3" to go to a non-X configuration.

Then run something like "xf86config" or edit the XF86Config file by hand to tone down the resolution and the color depth.

Hmm.. that seems odd, because it worked fine with windoze XP when I had it hooked up to another computer... but I'll try it.
