Backup and restore?

Hi all,
I am using RedHat AS2.1 and have a problem which need your help. I have my system backup (using tar) and now I want to restore. The problem is that I cannot boot into OS, so that cannot use "tar" to restore. I try to boot by CDROM and typing "linux rescue" at the command line. However, it cannot recognize tape.
Please help me, I'll appreciate it!
Sorry for my poor English!
