Automating LUKS with RHEL5.10 x86_64

Hello,

I am new to the forum so perhaps this has been asked before, but I could not locate a relevant article.

Basically, I am trying to automate the LUKS information so that I do not need to enter the required password everytime. It's a temporary thing and will be shut off when circumstances are required, before anyone mentions that.

In order to accomplish this, I have been following this:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=837416

I am sure everyone has seen this around at one point, its practically on every linux forum. I have no issues inputting any of the commands, my issue is when I get to the end of where you must restart or remount the devices. I receive an error "mount: special device /dev/mapper/sda3_crypt does not exist" So what I am wondering is if I forgot a step somewhere? or there is an additional step not covered in the tutorial?

For some background, the machine is also dual boot with windows 7 and I have tried doing this with LVM in place and without. Without seems more promising because the fstab now lists things based on /dev/mapper rather than some logical volume. So at least without, it looks as though it matches the tutorial.

Any information is appreciated and thanks in advance.

**Edit

Also, as a side note I found an article talking about activating logical volumes, perhaps there is a similar thing for my scenario, although I have no idea what the command would be.

Acknowledging your acknowledgement of this defeating the purpose of data security while at rest by placing the key right next to the lock for anybody to use...

I suspect the problem you are encountering is that the root filesystem (the one where you place your LUKS key used for unlocking the volume) is encrypted. Until you unlock it (by passphrase or keyfile), you can't access the keyfile to unlock it.

If your root filesystem is indeed on the LUKS volume, you'll need to include the LUKS keyfile used for unlocking the LUKS volume in the initrd or in a location available outside of the LUKS volume (like /boot) that is available to the kernel during initialization of the OS _before_ the LUKS volume is unlocked.

Good luck!

Ya i understand how ridiculous it is. Its for non IT personnel so trying to explain to your users that they need a long and complex key is absurd to them. But thanks, for some reason that hadnt occured to me to try that. Will update when i can
