a newbie having problem installing Mplayer

I'M SORRY THE QUESTION'S LENGTHY BUT PLEASE HELP ME

Hi, i'm very new to linux, using Redhat 9.0 on i686

I downloaded Mplayer (not downloaded the codecs yet) from www.mplayer.hu
i didn't find the player for RH 9.0 anywhere on the web so i downloaded Mplayer for fedora 3, hoping it would work on RH 9.0
when i tried to install it showed the folowing messages:

warning: mplayer-1.0pre8-0.1.20051019.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID
16a61572
error: Failed dependencies:
libXinerama.so.1 is needed by mplayer-1.0pre8-0.1.20051019
libXxf86dga.so.1 is needed by mplayer-1.0pre8-0.1.20051019
libXxf86vm.so.1 is needed by mplayer-1.0pre8-0.1.20051019
libasound.so.2 is needed by mplayer-1.0pre8-0.1.20051019
libasound.so.2(ALSA_0.9) is needed by mplayer-1.0pre8-0.1.20051019
libasound.so.2(ALSA_0.9.0rc4) is needed by mplayer-1.0pre8-0.1.20051019
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.3.4) is needed by mplayer-1.0pre8-0.1.20051019
libmp3lame.so.0 is needed by mplayer-1.0pre8-0.1.20051019

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now does that mean:
1. Mplayer doesn't work on RH 9.0? OR
2. i need to download the missing packages seperately, if so where do i
get it & how do i install it?? AND ALSO
3. after i download those codecs (huge file of 8.91 MB & i'm using
a slow dialup connection) where do i install it so that Mplayer can find
it??

Take what I'm saying here with a grain of salt as I might be wrong.

It means that there are some library files missing. For example, you need the libmp3lame.so.0 library to play mp3's. The filename won't necessarily be the same, so you might have to experiment a bit. Example, look for a file that has got the word "lame" in it and install the file.

You will have to install all those files first before mplayer will install. They might be on the CD's you installed from or you will have to download them manually from the internet.

Save yourself a lot of frustration and get yourself a newer distribution, like Fedora. It will probably be easier in the long run.

Hello friend,

Get yourself a older version of MPlayer from the website. The versions below 1.0 will work for that. Download the source code of the Mplayer from the website. Also download some of the skins from the website.

Log-In as root and issue the following commands:

gzip -d MPlayer*.tar.gz
tar -xf MPlayer*.tar
cd MPlayer*
./configure --enable-gui
make -s
make install -s

Now extract your skins into /usr/local/share/mplayer/skins.

Run MPlayer by issuing 'gmplayer'.
MPlayer get's installed by default in /usr/local/bin.

If you want extra codecs with MPlayer you can get them from the website with the essential codec package.
For configuring the codec package you need to extract them by following these steps:

gzip -d all-2005412*.tar.gz
tar -xf all-2005412*.tar

Now during configuring the MPlayer issue the following command:

./configure --enable-gui --with-codecsdir='path of your codecs directory'

Follow the other steps explained in MPlayer installation section as they are.

Nice MPlayer Experience.
Also try Xine from the xine organization.

Bye
Take Care
