Hi,

I just installed Red Hat 9 after using SuSE 9.1 for a while. I got pretty much everything configured the way I want, but there are a few things that I cannot seem to get to work and a few questions that remain.

(1) I'd like to mount my windows partitions, so I try the following:
mount -t ntfs -or /dev/hda1 /mnt/
=> mount: fs type ntfs not supported by kernel
Okay, so the kernel apparently doesn't support the ntfs file system. At the moment I'm using the 2.4.20-31.9 kernel. I cannot use the automatic updater if I were to upgrade to the 2.6 kernel. Is it possible to do it by hand? I wouldn't mind, but I'm simply afraid to screw everything up since I've never done it myself. Is RedHat compatible with the latest kernel?

(2) When I installed RedHat it installed 'KDE 3.1-13 Red Hat'. I checked the download sites, but the only KDE 3.3.1 I found under RedHat were the Fedore2 rmps. Is it possible to install the latest version of KDE under RedHat or will I just have to do with the version already installed? And again, by installing, will I be able to screw everything up? I would hate to reinstall everything again, so I'd like to keep things on the safe side ;).

(3) I cannot access my home network (internet works fine though). Whenever I click on the LAN Browser it gives me the following error:

Is there anything that needs to be installed before I can access the other computers on the same network? It didn't give me any problems in SuSE...

#1 - By default the Red Hat kernel doesnot support NTFS but you can download a small patch for NTFS compatibility...

that SHOULD work with your kernel... download it.. run "rpm -Uvh kernel-ntfs*.rpm"

#2 You should have stayed with GNOME on red hat.. it makes for a much nicer OS.. I'm not really sure about KDE under red hat... Of course.. this is still linx.. so if you'd like... you can always download the most recent KDE.. it just may take some tweaking to get it exactly the way you want.. after all.. red hat does modify gnome and kde to their specifications...

On a side note.. perhaps you should upgrade to Fedora... FC3 is out November 8... Also.. if you like the"Red hat" name and recognition... check out Red Hat Professional Workstation at Best Buy or CompUSA, etc.. It's about $70 and it's actually a full copy of RHEL WS 3 without the tech support.. but you still get installation support and a full year of updates...

If you don't have the money right now.. I recommend RHEL 4 beta... its more stable than Fedora 2 final was..and it's even running a GNOME 2.8 rc which is pretty cool... I like it a lot.. it's free for download and they are also supplying updates for the beta until final release is out.. which will be about 6 months.. So that's cool... you get Red Hat Enterprise for free... I definitely recommend checking that out.... you can get it on most any of the red hat mirrors under the "beta" folder...

#3 That looks like a srange KDE error... I don't understand it too well.. I recomend using Samba.. it doesn't apear that you are from your message...
