[beginner] linux boot

Hello,
I've just intalled linux besides windows 98.
When i try to boot, i find myself whith the grub prompt and i can't boot on either OS.
To boot i have to insert the redhat boot floppy and then boot on linux.
I had the files system like this on the HD :
win98,linux /, swap, linux home.
I read that on some old machines like mine Pentium Pro 256 m) you have to install the boot loader on a cylinder lower than the 1024 th.
the first linux starts on the 1029 nd.

But what i don't understand is that grub may be able to reach this cylinder and anyway win98 is on the 1st cylinder?

thanks for help

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.
