'Screen' ignores bash/emacs prefs! Why?

I have been using 'screen' for a while (and love it), but a problem I simply can not figure out is how to get my default emacs and bash preferences (that is, the configurations I have for emacs and bash BEFORE starting 'screen') to get loaded AFTER screen starts up. For example, before running 'screen', I can use 'll' as an alias for 'ls -l --color=tty'. After running 'screen', that alias is gone. I've scoured google for the answer and I can find nothing. I am beginning to think this is a RedHat-specific issue.

I don't know enough about how emacs and bash settings are loaded (the .bashrc and .emacs files in the user's home directory do NOT contain all the customizations that get done when RedHat boots up, so I think something else is up). And I don't know enough about how screen starts up to explain why it would ignore these other settings.

Does anyone know how to import (or otherwise synchronize) screen and non-screen settings? If not, can anyone explain how I can manually copy these settings over to screen? I'd be much in your debt.
