$TERM Variable Problems

I just started messing with my laptop that I installed Red Hat 8.0 on it, and configured for my wireless network. When I ssh to it using Putty or any other SSH client and man anything, all hyphens are replaced with "â" and is annoying the hell out of me. I have tried using xterm and vt100 with no luck. The Putty profile I use to connect is the exact same as I use to connect to ALL of my other SSH accounts that range from Red Hat 5.2, 7.2, FreeBSD, Slackware, Gentoo, and SUSE boxes. None of the others give me this problem, but my laptop just doesn't want me to use man for some reason. I don't know what to do. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Here's an example of what I have to put up with:

LS(1) User Commands LS(1)

NAME
ls − list directory contents

SYNOPSIS
ls [OPTION]... [FILE]...

DESCRIPTION
List information about the FILEs (the current directory by default).
Sort entries alphabetically if none of −cftuSUX nor −−sort.

Mandatory arguments to long options are mandatory for short options
too.

−a, −−all
do not hide entries starting with .

−A, −−almost−all
do not list implied . and ..

Nevermind. Found out from another forum. In case you are wondering I had to change the LANG="en_US.UTF-8" variable in /etc/sysconfig/i18n to LANG="en_US" and now I don't get that annoying "â" in place of hyphens.
