USB tab not displayed by pmount with Puppy 4.3.1

Hi,

I just made CD of Puppy4.3.1 and tried on two computers.

On AMD K6 based CPU (old computer) the puppy works for USB drives with pmount however it does not find the OneTouch scanner.

On HP Pavilion with AMD sempron, anu USB device in not recognized. Even pmount does not show USB tab. Interestingly the pmount shows for optical drives which I do not have except the CD.

How do I make puppy find the USB devices on HP system?

In addison I have another question as follows.

The puppy shows the ownership as root under rxvt. Is it true that the live CD use root as user? If so it is a very grave error on distro because of security requirement.

I have used other distros very successfully. I am trying for the small linux for both computers to work appropriately.

From the Menu button, what does menu-system-hardinfo hardware information give you if you select the USB devices one?
Also, try the storage one.

Sorry for the delay as I was out of town and could not on this computer and could not test your suggestion.

The menu-system-hardwareinfo does not show anything under USB section. I have also tried using MUT under pmount GUI. Stil it does not show USB tab. In addison, /proc/bus/usb is empty. This means the USB is not recognized on HP pavilion running on AMD sempron.

The same disk when loaded on old AMD K6 based cpu/motherboard computer, it works for USB storage. As for the scaner is concern, the Onetouch 6600 is not supported by SCAN project. So that is another thing. First I need to resolve USB storage issue.

I have a Compaq Presario Desktop with AMD processor and I added a scsi card for an external scsi ZIP250 drive and a scsi Relisys Infinity Scorpio 9600dpi legal size flatbed scanner.
When I plug in a usb flash drive, it is shown under USB as a scsi device. Strange!
But if you want to investigate farther, there is a scsi kernel version of Puppy 4.3.1 you might try.
I had a few PCs that claimed they had no scsi devices under the specs, and would not find devices that were found when running the scsi version of Puppy.
That is just a thought.

Thanks again for the new information.

I looked into the Puppy Linux home page and related links. I could not find the 4.3.1 version with SCCI device driver. All it mention is puppy 4.3.1iso. Could you please provide a link for SCSI version of puppy?

I will be searching it too.

There is a version with the latest kernel there called pup-431-scsi-intel_modems.iso that has kernel 2.6.30.5.
The other versions are clearly designated as to the kernel.

Thanks for the link. I found it and the new CD was tested. It does not change the situation at all. I think the issue of no USB found may come from the following additional boot parameters.
1. acpi=off
2. noapic

These are required so that the SATA disk is recognized and the kernel boot. Otherwise the boot stays in loop for disK error.

Ironically the DSL works for USB storage. I think something in the new kernel that does not allow the USB recognition.

I am lost at this moment. I will search to see if other forums might have similar issue outlined.
