Unable to boot Usb stick
 

[B][COLOR="SeaGreen"]Hi all, I am on a win98se, 233mhz, have loaded puppy 1.0.6 on a memorex pendrive. "My computor" shows "e" as removable disk. Bios shows Drive "e", but won't boot pendrive. Bios also shows zip/LC or something like that and have tried all settings in bios, but still no luck. Live Cd is successful in getting on net, after HD install, I can only boot with a floppy, but cannot connect to internet this way. My main goal is to be able to boot USB stick. Would appreciate greatly help on this USB thing, if any other info needed please let me know. Thanks

The bios needs to have the option to boot from USB as an option to boot from a USB drive device.

Any other way requires a floppy or cd to be used to boot up first to get a USB to boot from that point on. Check this link on Feather to build that. http://featherlinux.berlios.de/download.htm

Hi Brian1, thank you for your response!! I downloaded the image and will try to do this. Now I am not clear about whether I will need to boot with the floppy every time or does this add to my bios?. I assume that when I use the pendrive on a newer putor that I will not need the floppy? Where can I find the "how to" to install or make the floppy (extract?)? Thank you again for your help.

There's no need for any Feather stuff at all. (And why do people so often suggest using other distros when the person needing help already has the tools necessary to solve their problem?)

The Puppy liveCD includes the capability to make a WakePup floppy that will find Puppy wherever it's installed and boot it. I mean, boot Puppy liveCD, insert USB stick, install Puppy to USB stick, insert floppy, select "Make WakePup floppy" from menu, remmove CD, reboot. What could be simpler?

Freykatt, if your BIOS doesn't boot from USB then you will always need the floppy or the liveCD to boot. However, check that you have all the BIOS updates, I have a turn-of-the-century machine in my box pile that magically acquired USB boot capability after doing the full set of BIOS updates.

Not used PuppyLinux so I guess checking out the Puppy site might have helped.
You will always be required to start with a floppy or cd.
