Puppy Linux w/o John Murga Forum

Most version of Puppy Linux and many Add-On Software files are available for download from repositories (list at bottom) right now.

What’s needed is to move remaining Add-On Software files (pet files, SFS, etc) to repositories and stop using forums for file storage. Once this is done any new software files created could also be stored in repositories.

If files cannot be directly uploaded to repositories due to security or space concerns then it may be possible to allow the public to upload them to an interim site where persons who are authorized could then transfer them to repositories.

With this model in place any forum can serve as a communication channel and Puppy Linux users will no longer be dependent on John Murga forum.

Puppy needs a communication channel....My question is, what happened to the JMurga puppy forum? I've been unable to access it for a couple days now.

Agreed, and I created www.puppylinuxforum.org to be that channel.

Here's my opinion about what happened.

Oh, O.K. I guess I didn't realize there were issues with that forum. I'll check yours out then if I need any extra help...

Thx..

The OP is no longer a hypothetical situation - it is reality.

Forums are not repositories and should never be used as such.

Now that John Murga Forum is permanently closed we see the folly of attempting to use forums for large scale file storage.

miriam-e 11-26-2011 06:03 PM

It would be wonderful if PuppyLinuxForum could step in to fill the vacuum, unfortunately the owner's continual bashing of the murga forum seems to be turning prospective users away. Until that is reined in it is not likely to gain traction. There were a few bad elements on the murga forum, sure, but 90% of the users were helpful, smart, and polite. People don't want hate, they want to share knowledge and learn from others.

puppyite 11-26-2011 06:27 PM

Since permanent closure of John Murga Forum the Puppy Linux Forum has welcomed more members and new posts than ever before.

During my time on site I observe many members read Reform Puppy Linux both before and directly after joining and only three have ever expressed any opinion to the contrary about my criticism of John Murga.

Even so my forum is not a repository and the folly of using forums as such is what this thread is about.

...only three have ever expressed any opinion to the contrary about my criticism of John Murga

And I notice some (all?) were immediately banned by you. Perhaps, like me, most visitors to the site were simply weary of all the venom there and declined to comment.

Please note that I wasn't trying to criticise you. I was simply stating a fact. Most people are not interested in an ongoing flamewar. They just want to share info and learn. By carrying on in constant put-downs of what was genuinely a useful resource you are killing your own site. Ease off on the venom and you'll find people will be happy to be a part of your site.

puppyite 11-26-2011 07:03 PM

Out of 126 members only 3 are banned one of whom is 30 day temp ban.

I appreciate you are trying to be helpful but you are not in possession of all the facts.

I receive many messages of appreciation, including congratulations about how I was instrumental in getting “Truly off-topic” closed to the public.

the venom and bs originated elsewhere and was simply responded to, if you don't like some of your own medicine then don't dish it out, and i'm not referring to you

not to mention promoting pages of outright fabrications and falsehoods

or are you saying it only went one way? and funny you only mention one side where 2 are involved

when it comes to OS questions in the rest of the forums, that is a separate thing

the new forums are barely sorted and the members involved will define what it may become, one way or another

there were already takedown offers in the past but they were pretty much ignored if not mocked

as i understand the banning policy also, a first one is no where near final, not to mention puppytude is well known, is constantly moderated and commented on, including bans when they respond to whatever on the net

where does that history come from may I ask?

without feedback or involvement, puppyite can to whatever he likes, with whatever he has and it surely won't be for everyone

perhaps you prefer this alternative

miriam-e 11-26-2011 07:33 PM

Perhaps you won't hear what I'm trying to say, so this is my last comment on the subject.

I was attacked by some people on the murga forum and witnessed a very rude put-down by Murga himself of another poster who was trying to be helpful, so I understand why you're pissed. However you are missing the larger point. Most of the forum, perhaps 99%, was truly wonderful. It was people coming together to share info and learn from each other.

It doesn't help to attract people to your site when perhaps 90 or 80% of it is dedicated to hate against murga and his forum. If you fix that, then your forum might flourish. If not then it will sadly be an opportunity wasted.

It is especially dissonant when reading on your posts about how hateful some on the murga forum were and then you buy into exactly the same mindset. Please do change that. It clouds your judgement and wastes the opportunities you have before you.

puppyite 11-26-2011 07:50 PM

I hear what you say however as a man of integrity and honor I am compelled to speak out against those who would victimize others. John Murga has victimized many people and I refuse to stand idly by and do nothing. I feel it is my duty to cast the light of truth on his character.

If I lose a few potential members because I am unable to be a fanboy of John Murga then that’s a bargain I’m happy to make.

This thread has been badly derailed. My apologies to mods about this.
