Puppy Linux 4 & Ardour 2
Hi There...
I'm just wondering if it's possible to get Ardour 2 working on Puppy Linux 4. If so... then please show me a dumb-ass-noobie way through the setup process. Thank You, toni S / Finland. |
Possible? - yes
Practicle? - probably not Ardour is a fairly heavy application by puppy standards. To run Ardour properly, you need a realtime or low-latency kernel and the jack audio server - I can't imagine that either is available for puppy. Ardour isn't that hard to compile if you can find the requirements. On Puppy I can imagine that you might have to compile some of the requirements - so this is a fairly big project for a self-proclaimed 'dumb-ass-newbie' :) I would try xubuntu (7.10 for the time being) - it has all the requirements packaged. |
I love puppy but for audio work I would recommend dyne:bolic (www.dynebolic.org/).
This is a live CD with low latency kernel which has Ardour, Jack, Ladspa effects, Hydrogen & whole lot of other audio stuff already installed. There is also an HD install method a bit like the puppy method of copying compressed files to the hard drive. It is designed to work on older harware so it flies on newer kit. |
Hello all, perhaps someone still always view this thread...
Just informing what maybe important: Ardour can running with Puppy Linux, and that was Ardour 2.3 on Puppy Linux 4.1.2. I use such Ardour (and all its dependencies) in debian package that mainly compiled for Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy and just running well with Puppy Linux 4.1.2. I even just distribute Puppy 4.1.2 Live CD with Ardour + qjackctl for Indonesian Musicians. These are many reasons for some musicians looking for Ardour compiled/installed on "MINI LINUX DISTRO", and they were even wanna buy it with proper price of course. |
I still do not think there is much point running Ardour on puppy as it does not have a low-latency kernel.
If the PC is good enough I would use musix, for older PC's I would use dyne:bolic (which I have used on a PIII with 500MB of RAM). Both of these also have plenty of LADSPA effects, Hydrogen drum machine & audio editors as well. |
