Puppy 501 won't load

I am running the Puppy CD 501 on my desktop without problems but it won't load on either my Packard Bell laptop or Samsung Q1 Tablet PC. Something about "not finding drives" seems to be the issue. Any ideas? TIA

Did you set the laptop and tablet to boot from CD rsp. USB?

The BIOS needs to know which boot medium to find Puppy on and to boot from.

I haven't encountered any booting/loading issues with other CDs. The problem with Puppy is that it starts loading OK. See below:

Loading drivers needed to access disk drives....DONE

Searching for Puppy files in computer disk drives... lupu-501.sfs not found. Drop ping out to initial-ramdisk console...
/bin/sh: can't access tty: job control turns off.

You might want to try renaming lupu-501.sfs to lupu_501.sfs and see if it finds it also. There are suggestions in that thread on how to rename the .sfs

I think that my problem is knowing how to copy lupu-501.sfs to RAM if the CD doesn't load. No problems on the desktop but my laptop won't have it as explained in my previous post. How can I configure Puppy and access BootManager? Somewhat confused. Need enlightening. TIA

I've tried to copy the required ludu-501.sfs from the desktop (where Puppy has loaded perfectly) to a flash drive to install on laptop but it won't read it nor copy it. Stumped! Puppy would have been ideal for the Q1 Tablet PC.

Maybe we are missing some information here. Let me ask you this:

How do you boot Puppy on the laptop and the tablet PC?
From an internal CD-drive or from an external one, hooked up via USB?
Or are you trying to boot directly from USB?
Have you md5-checked your downloaded ISO?
Do other Linux' run? gparted or pmagic CD e.g.?

If the answer to the latter is yes, then you can go about and set up a Linux partition for Puppy. 2-3GB would be enough. Install Grub to /boot/grub/ and copy some files from the Puppy ISO into this partition or a subdirectory on it. Here are some good instructions how to go about this:

As you might already have a Linux partition and grub, then all that is necessary is to edit menu.lst accordingly. Here is an example entry for 501:

Thanks for coming in. First of all, I would like to run Puppy without the HD. The RAM installation appeals to me for various reasons. I have used an external drive via USB, like for all the livecds I have run in the past. This morning, I had some measure of success by installing Puppy_Crypt_430. No problem with this one! Why doesn't it work with Lucid Puppy 501? Computers...

Just to clarify:

A frugal installation of Puppy to the HD does NOT result in Puppy running from HD. Puppy loads itself into RAM every time you boot it.

And...if other Puppies run, did you md5-check Puppy 501?

I appreciate your help Wu2wei and yes I did md5-check Puppy 501 which, I stress, works fine on two other machines. The Q1 is the one I am having trouble with. Puppy Crypt installed alright but can't find the install icon/file anywhere. So that's no good either. All my checks and re-checks to boot 501 have proved negative so I have decided to pull out the plug on this one.

That's okay riki, if you decide for some other OS.

Just as a general information: You find all executables for installed programs under /usr/share/applications. That goes for all Puppies as far as I can remember back.
