for starters puppy is a VERY minimal distro

under 200 meg
it dose NOT come with anything "extra"

also puppy 5.2 is OLD !!! and from Jan. 2011
http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/pub/os/Linux...nux/puppy-5.2/

-- if this is the slightly newer 5.2.8
http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/pub/os/Linux...x/puppy-5.2.8/
it is only slightly newer April 2012

the current is 5.7.1
-- royally messed up web address ( blank spaces in the name )

as to an "ipad" it is using the Apple HFS+ partition format
( like Windows 7 uses the Microsoft format NTFS )
that software will need to be installed

ipod puppy 5.2

John Thank you for your kind reply
I was trying to use an old ipod player rather than the ipad. I will try the newer Puppy distro you suggest to see if that will work but I dont think I will get into creating new partitions just for the ipod.

I am ancient but am a long time novice Linux user and like to try new distros on a couple of spare oldish machines from time to time. I like Puppy as it is so small and is ok for a office applications and surprisingly quick from switch on. I have tried some heavier Fedora and Ubuntu LTS distros which are more comprehensive.

"I was trying to use an old ipod player rather than the ipad."
my mistake

if the ipod was activated on a Windows xp machine then is is formatted as Fat32
if it was activated on an Apple computer it is formatted to HFS or HFS+

even on old version of puppy should be able to read a fat32 partition

as for USING an older ipod
you will NEED to be running "GTKpod" or rhythmbox

gtkpod trys to replace itoons
