how to start intial ram disk while running from h.d???

HI
i've installed puppy on my ideflash and i want to intialize intial ram disk at the startup ... so while using the live cd i can type at the boot prompt puppy pfix=rdsh, nox, ram but i don't know what to do while puppy is installed on my h,d ????
i've tried editing /extlinux.conf to look like that
default vmlinuz initrd=/initrd.gz ide=nodma pcmedia=ideflash pfix=rdsh,nox,ram
put it didn't work , x-window runs at startup ......................
