Happyhippo, your problems sound complex, they would be best posed at the puppy forum linked in Raffy's post: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=457465

USB Detection

Have occasionally had problems with detection of USB keys and hard drives also. One thing you could try would be to open a console window and type - modprobe ehci-hcd>enter and modprobe usb-storage>enter. Then try starting MUT again and see if the drives show up. If they show up and can be mounted try putting these commands in etc/rc.d/rc.local so that they run on start up.
Another thing that has an effect on USB detection is where the device is plugged in. With my laptop USB drives plugged into the OEM USB connection (USB 1.1) are detected but connected thru a PCMCIA card or a hub this doesn't always work.

If the above don't work then hopefully one of the more advanced folks here will have some ideas to offer.

As for the prompt when you are starting 2.01 - try typing - xwin>enter or start xwin>enter. This assumes that you had 2.0 fully set up and configured. If you feel that configuring the x server from scratch is needed type xorgwizard>enter. Sometimes when upgrading to a new version of Puppy I've found that you have to tell it to start the X server.

Both of the above bits of advice may or may not help - but trying them will at least eliminate the easy and obvious fixes. If they don't work then a bit more information on you system and/or hardware might help with figuring out the problem.

thanks slvrldy17.
i have tried the modprobe commands but still mut and pmount don't see the digital camera ( when i use the live cd the drive can be found and mounted)

the other tips i will try later on

happyhippo 07-04-2006 11:59 PM

tried the xwin and xorgwizard and belief it or not it can not make my system to work.
where 2,0 seamonkey makes my old pc running ( except usb) i get that that xserver failed

2.01 and USB

Did a full option 2 hard drive install of 2.01 Seamonkey on my backup machine and it IS acting a bit strangely. Initially no detection in MUT of anything beyond the floppy drive and hard disk partitions. Using the modprobe commands helps - USB keys/drives then show up and can be mounted. CD/DVD drives are not showing up in MUT until I start Xine to play a CD - they work OK but just don't show up until you start playing the CD - then MUT detects/shows them when it is started. Haven't tried to use/run a data CD yet.

Hippo - have you tried connecting your digital camera and powering it on then clicking on the drives icon to run MUT? Does it show anything different?

I'm going to post on this in the main Puppy forum/bugs forum to see if others have had problems with this. Go to www.puppylinux.org > forums > Bugs - I'm curious as to what is happening here.

This is what I use ...

You might already know this but; it does not hurt to post it.

modprobe usb-storage
dmesg | tail -n 50 (did it get seen)
fdisk -l

happyhippo 07-05-2006 11:46 AM

my cd/dvd drive is showing up in mut and pmount, jusd like the other partitions on de hd and the floppy.
tried the commands but stil no go.

puppy 2.01 is even stranger, where xorgwiz has no problem in seamonkey to get going, now it can not find anything.
so i am stcuk to seamonkey 2, and thats no point but want the usb drive to work

this came out of de dmesg command

USB Cont.

Hippo,
Could you copy your last post (dmesg output) to the bugs forum thread I started at puppylinux.org? It would help to have some of the folks there who are better than I am with this stuff see the info. More likely to get a good solution/answer.

Thanks,

Alice

What did your ....

What did fdisk -l (that's the letter L lower caps) show?
Enter it after the modprobe command. This command will tell you if the usb is seen. Maybe the USB is not partitioned or not formatted??

Are you familiar with fdisk?

happyhippo 07-06-2006 12:03 PM

i am not familiar with fdisk, althoug i worked with the fdisk of dos.
but this was what fdisk found out
Disk /dev/hda: 4311 MB, 4311982080 bytes
240 heads, 63 sectors/track, 557 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 15120 * 512 = 7741440 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 255 408 1164208+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda2 409 557 1126440 5 Extended

/dev/hda5 409 517 824008+ 6 FAT16
/dev/hda6 518 557 302368+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris

Partition table entries are not in disk order

linux01 07-07-2006 07:29 AM

HUmmm...

It appears that the usb is not being recognized by the system.
In my systems, the usb appears as /dev/sdaX on "fdisk -l", where X is the partition number.
Is USB sopport enabled in the bios?
Run the modprobe, dmesg and fdisk -l commands on the same terminal window.
Is this a camera? If so, have you tried the card in a card reader?

I see that the modprobe loaded the usb support. However it did not see the device!
Have you tried installing the OS with the USB device plugged in?
It could be that since the USB wasn't there when the software installation was being performed, it only loaded drivers for the available hardware only. Since the USB was not part of the hardware, it did not load any USB support!!!

just direct usb and later on a usb hd drive.
both are seen with pmount and mut while using the cd, not using booting of hd

did that today, even tried to do a new harddisk install but grub mesd things up by taking the usb drive partitions in the bootloader and not those of the hda1
same result.
with cd it works, from harddisk it won't

Ran out of ideas for now. If I can think of something else, I'll write again.....
I have tried to run Puppy from a usb stick but, the usr_cram.fs is problematic to load to the ramdisk.
I don't have Puppy on the HD but, you just gave me something to do with my empty 1.5 Gigs HD space on my computer. Let you know.....

happyhippo 07-09-2006 03:51 AM

well the problem is solved.
you can read the answer in this tread
http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?p=56850#56850

thanks to all that thought with me to find the answer.
