Help needed setting up remote desktop or VNC
Linux newbie here - I am building a music server and chose puppy over Windows 2000 (powers my current server). I used a small ECS industrial mobo with an on-board compact flash socket and loaded puppy from an iso image. It installed easily and recognized my wireless card, the on-board video, etc. So far so good. I want to place this unit next to my stereo system as a headless server, so will need VNC or remote desktop access to control it (my current server uses VNC). I downloaded VNC server but it fails on startup. I started to download some of the remote desktop modules but would like any assistance available before proceeding. Love the performance of this system with 512kb memory and a Pentium 600 CPU! TIA, --Mike

AFIK there is no remote desktop (MSRDP 3389) based servers available for linux. But VNC server must be able to start happily if X libraries are installed. The vncserver program must be giving a log on the startup. Inspecting the log must be giving you a clue on what is happening.

Thanks for the response. I ran the vncserver command interactively and received the following messages:
vncserver -geometry 800x600 -depth 16 Xvnc: error while loading shared libraries: libwrap.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory >...so I'm missing a library - where can I find it and where does it go? /root/.vnc/xstartup: line 5: xsetroot: command not found >...message repeats for line 6 - I'm missing xsetroot Display :1 listening on TCP port 5901 >...looks like it's starting up... # error: could not open display >...no dice... (ROX-Filer:8194): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :1 >...that's it Next steps? TIA, --Mike |
I did some more searching on this forum and found the x11vncserver, installed it, and I'm on the air! Thanks!
