gtkterm or other serial communications software for puppy 4.1.2

I am looking for serial communications software for Puppy linux 4.1.2

I need to send program data to a CNC machine via serial port. I think gtkterm is what I need, but I can't figure out how to install it in Puppy.

If you know of another program that would work and is easy to install, or can help me install gtkterm in puppy please let me know.

About my system:
Netier Net Xpress XL1000
250Mhz AMD-K6 3D processor
128MB RAM
The harddrive is a 256MB compact flash card in an internal IDE/ATA adapter.
Puppy linux 4.1.2

Thanks,
cncman

Try minicom or putty

For serial communication I always use good old minicom (console based). Minicom is installed in several linux distributions by default. Try a plain simple "which minicom" to check for its presence.

I have friends that like to use putty but I've never tried this one. They found it easier to install than gtkterm (that's the reason they use it).

I still have not gotten any further trying to install gtkterm, nor did I find Minicom in the Puppy repository. After much searching I read of a program called cutecom. I checked and found cutecom 0.13.1 in the PETget official puppy 3 repository. It installed nicely and I gave it a try.

I want to use a BAFO BF-800 USB to Serial adapter. So I plugged it in and dmesg showed the pl2303 driver loaded. I connected a Radio Shack RS232 mini tester to the adapter, fired up cutecom and opened /dev/ttyUSB0. The RTS and DTR lights turned green so I sent a test file out the port and TD turned yellow.

In short everything appears to be working well. I am very pleased that the serial adapter works without configuration. I read that some have had trouble with the pl drivers in puppy.

Now the only question is will the CNC machine I am going to connect to like the information as sent by cutecom? Well, I won't know for sure until I get this PC in the machine shop and actually test it with the machine. If cutecom works like hyperterminal I'm in great shape.

Thanks for the reply gmbastos I do appreciate your help.
