Dialup Internet Problems
 

I am currently have problems connecting to the Internet on my new copy of Puppy Linux. When I use one of the network programs that is in the menu and try to connect it either says it can't or it can't find the modem. I have a Soft V92 Fax Modem that runs perfectly on Windows.

Is your copy of Puppy version 2.1 released a few days ago.
It now has Dial-up support straight away.
I don't know hoe long you have been a Linux user, but the longer you spend using it, the sooner you realize that alot of internal dial-up modems are what they call "winmodems" which require a Windows Driver be installed for them to Operate.
Some what they call "LT Modems" or SL modems" work with Linux.
It;s not Linux's fault, it's "Windows" as Microsoft and the Modem Makers have designed these modems to only work with Windows.

Up until the release of Puppy 2.1 you didn't have much luck of getting on the net with Puppy without downloading some Linux Drivers.

I recommend you try the following Linux Distro's to see if you have any chance of your modem working.

Mepis 3.4-3, Puppy 2.1, Linspire 5.0, Freespire 1.0 and Xandros 3.0 free edition.

All the above distro's supply dial-up drivers upon boot.

If you have no luck getting your internal modem to work you can probably pick up an external modem quite cheaply.
I got the one I use for about $20 Australian including freight on Ebay and the connection wizard detected it straight away. External modems are usually a hardware modem which means that the modem itself does all the work unlike most internal modems which rely on software to do the work. So avoid any that are listed as "Softmodem" or "Winmodem". This external modem co-exists happily with the internal modem that came with this computer and makes a nice back-up.

I'm told that 212b2 has the Smartlink softmodem drivers working, so that might be worth a try.

Always try to remmber to quote your version of Puppy when you post asking for help.

Can't check it out for you because I don't have a modem....
