CD drive fails to mount
 

Hi everybody,
I have Puppy installed on my hd (ext2) and being a long time Mac user and a Windows convert, this is the most fun I've had on a computer.
Being a newbie, I've been getting by ok but this came up yesterday,
"Puppy drive mounter: ERROR" It says that there's a failure and that media was not removed properly and asks me to remedy the situation.
Now I ran fsck from the console to no avail and the problem affects both drives, a cd reader and a cd burner which is strange since I haven't used the latter with Puppy.I have tried to mount it from the console with "/dev/hdd mount" and I get a "permission denied" Should I boot from the Puppy cd and try to reset the mount points and how, or is possible to do it from within.Thanks.

Hi,

First, check if you are logged on as root.

Second, you have to write mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdd /directory

Third, if it still doesn't work, I think you have to enable scsi emulation. On my pc, this is done by adding
append="hdd=ide-scsi"
to my /etc/lilo.conf file ... and reboot to make it effective.

In Puppy the default is to run as root, and there is no LILO. And the OP is talking about the MUT drive mount tool, not mounting from the bash prompt.

Profolio, what version of Puppy, what was the CD that caused the problem, etc? From what you say the only clue I can get is that you physically removed a mounted CD.

You may want to check with "ls -l /dev/cdrom /dev/cdrw" that your devices are pointing at the right hardware, BTW.

The Puppy version is 2.02 and if I remember correctly I had changed the bios settings to boot another distro's live cd. You might be right in assuming that I physically removed it although I can't be 100% sure in this household (old habits die hard (lol)). In dev, cdrom points to target hdd,the same as in MUT.MUT will mount an iso image cd and eject it as well. But when a media cd is inserted, MUT comes up but steadfastly refuses to mount it, hence the failure notice.
If push comes to shove, I just might reinstall.

OK, I think we're making some progress here. I've had 202 installed on several machines with no mount issues, but it might be worth trying 211 or 212b anyway.

Just to clarify, are you saying that some kinds of media mount and some don't, or that no CD will mount? (Note that you can't mount an audio CD beause they don't have a filesystem - but GXine will play them happily anyway.)

You hit the nail right on the head Mark. Music CDs play with GXine and I tried a photo CD and it mounted through MUT without a glitch.Stange since I could've sworn that the same music cd once mounted.That's what you get when you switch from one OS to the other.

Profolio, glad to have been of help. Even more glad that you are using and enjoying Puppy. With regard to your remark about how much fun you are having with Puppy, I still find it amazing how much personal enjoyment I get out of being in control of my own computer with the help of Linux, and most often these days that means Puppy :-)
