Can not record audio (silent on playback)
 

Prerecord records audio, but playback is silent.

I have verified that the inboard speaker does record.

???

Webcam does not playback audio either.

Take a look with alsamixer in a terminal to see if it is muted.

I found another mixer (forgot name) that had the mic turned off.
