Booting from USB key: "No linux found"

Hi people, I was running puppy 2.16 for the last two weeks at my workplace (installed on my pendrive, so I don't have to use windows). Then I decided to upgrade to 2.17 and when I booted at my workplace I got a message telling me something like "Kernel panic. not syncing" (something like that). So, when I was home, I formatted the USB key with makedosfs -IF 32 /dev/sdb and reinstalled puppy; booted it from the USB key to test if the installation had succeeded and it booted without problems. After that, I tried to boot the pendrive at my workplace, but I get a message telling me something like "No linux found", and then, it gives me a "boot:" prompt. So what's wrong here? Is it possible that the simple fact of having inserted the USB key on the windows machine have corrupted some file(s) inside it?

Not a big problem since I can reinstall it when I'm at home; the only thing is that I'm at work right now with nothing to do, really bored, and honestly, I can't stand using windows
Thanks in advance.
