XHTML & CSS: internal/external stylesheets and their compatibility with old browsers

I'm building a website using XHTML, PHP and CSS. One of the key considerations is compatibility with older and text mode browsers because I have a strange affinity with ancient computers and the command line.

Would it be better for me to link to an external stylesheet, or should I just have the stylesheet in the header part of the HTML page (called as an include by PHP)?

I'm worried that older browsers might not support linked stylesheets. Will this be a problem (bearing in mind that I'm not talking about a "normal" situation here, I'm talking about some potentially *really* old browsers)? How old will a browser have to be before it stops being able to deal with linked stylesheets?

Come to think of it, how old would a browser have to be before it borks at CSS itself, or for that matter, XHTML?

Thanks in advance and yes, I'm weird .

According to Google, IE 3.0 (buggily) supported linked style sheets as early as 1996. I wouldn't worry.

Thanks. I'm thinking now I might just include the stylesheet anyway. It annoys me when I'm looking at some source code and have to type in another URL to get to the stylesheet.

Clears that up though. Thanks again.
