X_CreateGC BadValue

All, I'm writing an xscreensaver hack and after some rewriting it has begun to crash. When I run it I now get the following error:
X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 55 (X_CreateGC)
Value in failed request: 0x2000001f
Serial number of failed request: 184
Current serial number in output stream: 188

As far as I can tell (judging by print statements) an XSync call is causing this error but its only a best guess. Any ideas?
