Wher can I find the reference to C/C++ runtime manual?

I am new to Linux. I currently don't know where is the reference of the C/C++ runtime reference.

For example, I know for printf I should man 3 printf, but I don't have any idea why it should be 3 and why it can't be man 2 printf?

Thanks.

you could use "man printf" , the 3 only tells man to look in the "3" file (theres a total of 8) ... look at your man directory, apparently it has something to do with organizing library functions, and regular program manuals, etc

for info on the c library, use "info libc" , info is more complex then man, but it does a better job of documenting libraries because of its node-leaf style organization (like web pages)

yes.
Man has different sections. And commands in different sections
may have the same name.

For instance on solaris here at work there is a /usr/bin/printf
for use in shell commands (linux too probly) which
is in section 1.
So if i do man printf i get thet version by default.
I f i want the C function I have to specify section
3c on solaris.

If you run xman ir shows the organization of man sections.

simple!
