what language after visual basic?


hi all, i'm new to linux, and am wondering what language would be best to start learning as i have an humble background in html, and, visual basic 6. thx for any response.

It really depends on what you want to do. C/C++, perl, or python are good choices.

depends what you're after really. if you want a straight up big ass language, C++ and Java are ready and waiting. if you want to go towards the potentially more system based side of things, you might prefer Perl or Python, which can act suprisingly "individual" at times, and not always as translatable in terms of generic skills. All horses for courses really. Me, I love perl....

thank you for the insightful responses. i am looking at more sytem based apps. i've had a ball writing stuff for my windows box. so perl and python seem to be the answer. off i go. thx again.
