What is the use of lang in <head lang=''>

Hi there

It is documented that lang attribute of <head> or <body> is used to specify different languages. But how does it work. Not clear. Actually I want to incorporate Portuguese(which uses many symbols) in my web site. Can lang attribute be of some help to me.

Please help.

This is the primary language of the web page (or element - it can be attributed to a p tag) This is essentially used by web spider, search engines to collect data and my be used by the browser to improve the rendering of the text. However this is not the same as the encoding that will tell the browser amongst other things the character set being used.

graeme.
