what is the difference between "configure" host and target?

In our belovered ./configure tools there are "host" and "target" switch. What is the difference? When is the time when we do host=archA and target=archB

eg. if you are on alpha system compiling software to a sparc environment. You would have a host alpha and target sparc.

I thought, if I want to do something like this I would have to set build= alpha and set host=target= sparc. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the setting I've been using to compile my programs. So my confusion is still with when do we neet to set host=archA and target=archB.

hmm.. I'm probably wrong here; needed to do cross-compiling in practice.
