I am building a website, user can login and do some operation on database. I think https protocol may be useful for this.

Only if the unencrypted transmission is HTTP. There's also SSH, SFTP, secure CVS, MSN, Jabber, etc. etc. etc. which also use SSL to create an encrypted tunnel through which information is exchanged.
if you compile apache with ./configure --enable-ssl then you don't have to do a lick of programming to use SSL... just generate or buy a certificate and configure apache to use it. Lots of online documentation to do that...
