When you use the SSL(Secure Socket Layer) to create a tunnel to exchange information in encrypted form, the result is https

It is primarily useful if you don't want anyone to take a peek at your data and information

It will generally depend on the language you use

Try searching for 'SSL Programming'. If you want for any specific language, add it to the search. I think this will give you results

Only if the unencrypted transmission is HTTP. There's also SSH, SFTP, secure CVS, MSN, Jabber, etc. etc. etc. which also use SSL to create an encrypted tunnel through which information is exchanged.

God I'm picky

if you compile apache with ./configure --enable-ssl then you don't have to do a lick of programming to use SSL... just generate or buy a certificate and configure apache to use it. Lots of online documentation to do that...
