what does EXPORT_SYMBOL do?

hi all.
i was just browsing through some kernel code, and i see EXPORT_SYMBOL(function_name) in many places.
what does this do? is it a function macro declared someplace else?

an instance is in kernel/time.c...

tia.

it's defined in linux/module.h , tho i dont think looking at the definition will be that pleasing. it basically inserts a given symbol, ie a function/variable, into the kernels symbol table so that u can reference it.
