web-based vs. client-server?


What is difference between web-based application and client-server application ?

well, technically web-based applications are client-server, with the client being your web browser (netscape....) and the server being the web server (apache....).

but if you're referred to a program like kmail accessing sendmail as opposed to netscape accessing a web-based sendmail interface, then the differences are pretty easy. the server load is going to be a LOT heavier for web-based interfaces due to the fact that the server is not only running the application which is actually accessing your mail, but also the mailer daemon - as opposed to using something like kmail, which is run on the client.

basically, the load is a lot heavier on the server for web apps, but web apps are also a LOT more accessible, since virtually any machine with a GUI has a browser.
