web-based file browser

Hi,

this question is not about home installs but servers instead.
I'm sure some of you are familiar with the various control panels such as Cpanel, Ensim, 'etc offered by hosts.

they all seem to contain a web-based file browser of some sort, I'm wondering how its doable.

where/how do they get the file information/listings?

Thanks
