Want to develop audio mixing software: Where to start??

Hi,

I just started a degree in computer science and one on my first goals is to develop a software to mix tunes dancehall/party style, something like Mixmeister. I am thinking about java at the moment, until i learn otherwise.

My problem is this: Where do i start??

Can someone recommend any books, source code, tutorials, any information, on how to get started.

I'm browsing around searching for 'Audio APIs' but i get the feeling i'm not quite there yet...

I would get on the Audacity or Ardour forums (or lists) and start asking questions there. You may even be able to help them out as you learn.
