Using gcc68k

I'm using Linux and gcc68k to a generate cross-compiled image to run on a Motorola 68000 microprocessor. I'm not running a Linux kernel on the 68k but a simple OS that isn't doing a great deal. I want to do some file I/O from my simple OS, but looking through the Linux sources the I/O, as you would expect, is heavily involved with the kernel.

This may be a bit of a dumb question, but can I use the Linux filing system, such as mount, fopen, fwrite etc.., without worrying about the hooks into the kernel? Do I need an additional set of 68k libraries or does gcc68k contain all that I need?
