Question Use mailto link that is independent to outlook express

Hey Guys,

Ok so I am creating a webpage where there is a mailto: link where people can send emails just by clicking. However if you did not setup your email information on the desktop then if you clicked the link it would say that you need to setup the account like provide pop3 or http email info. I hope I am being clear. Then I found this webpage by where when you click on the email link it opens a graphic webpage that provides the subject line, the text area etc and a submit button. I think it might be javascript but I am not sure.

Is there a way to create an email link that is independent to any outlook or any account setup that is required.

Thanks

The answer to your specific question is no, you can't specify what the client does with the mailto: command, besides specifying basic properties, such as subject and body text. However, if the client doesn't have an email program set up, a dialog like the one you describe will probably pop up. The web page you saw most likely uses a server-side script such as PHP. You can easily get a copy-and-paste PHP email script by googling it.

The short answer is "No".

'<a href="mailto"...>' is a standard HTML tag that's interpreted however your browser sees fit. And most Windows-based browsers will bring up your default Windows mail client ... which is almost inevitably Outlook.

Perhaps the easiest workaround is a server-side "guest book" type mail app: instead of a "mailto" link, it's a link to a simple HTML text form; upon clicking "[Submit]", the server automatically generates the e-mail. Not only does this resolve the "Outlook" problem, but the client doesn't have to have ANY kind of e-mail access whatsoever, and it'll still work.

Just a thought .. PSM
