update software from internet code examples

Hi all,
I've been thinking to adding the ability to update some code I've been working on from the internet. So basically writing some C/C++ code that on startup of the software looks across the next to a server to update itself. However I have no idea how to do this, can anyone point to to linux tutorials or examples which show how to do this?

Thanks in advance

????????

How do you update your code manually and what is the difference between the manual process and between the Internet-based one ?

I.e. filesystem objects are still filesystem objects, the compiler is still the compiler, the linked is still the linker, etc.

Sorry to you seem to misunderstand what I'm saying I obviously haven't made myself clear .

I'm talking about adding a chuck of code to an executable that will speak to my PC/Server across the net see there's a new version of itself and install this. EG Windows updates, "xyz has a new version" etc.

So, forget for a time being about doing this automatically - how would you manually check that a new version exists ?
