Starting Linux Programming... Where?

Hello! I'm a Slacker and really looking to get into programming for the Linux environment - my question(s) are:

Where should I start?
I imagine that I need to start with the core linux system - can anyone suggest a guide to help me along the path?

Also, I should think that I'll need to look at KDE and/or Gnome (I use KDE) - are there any better sources than KDE 2.0 Development out there for KDE and ANYthing for Gnome?

I'm quite familiar with C/C++, Pascal, Java but I'm completely open to another language too - Ruby/Python etc

Any help would be greatly appreciated
