start X without a window manager

Is there a way to start x without starting a window manager??

This is what I want to do: have a computer set so that when it boots, it starts X, but goes to a java swing application that I have, and the user is unaware of any other application on the system. If they quit the application, it will shutdown the system. I know how I can have the system shut down when they close the application, but I have no idea on the first part. Thanks.
