Question speed/specs for ttyS0 or some other standard serial port?

Hey everyone!
Here's my question:
what are the specs (or at least the bit speed) of the ttyS0 port. I want to write some code in an attempt to communicate through a network using the standard serial port.
Thanks for all feedback and help.
Also, if anyone can lead me to a HOWTO or book that is good and relevant to my desires, that is greatly appreciated.

Hko,
thanks! That guide looks great!
I can't read it right now, but later in the weekend I will
Thanks again.

Though I find the HOWTO above better, don't forget the obvious ones:
