Software Development

I'm interested in getting my hands wet with software development, can anyone recommend a Linux distro with a decent develpoer community that is easy to get involved in and learn from, I'm still in the process of learning C and my programming skills are getting there...

I do have some exposure to Linux, I did use YDL but quickly ditched it because it was slow, even after messing around with various WM and other tweaks.
