Smalltalk become: method

I'm using VisualWorks and I'm trying to learn more about the system in
general and how some classes interact.

I ran into following problem:
I first tried to print a string to the Transcript from within
Object>>become: . Then I tried to insert a breakpoint in that same method.
But in both cases, VisualWork just hangs. When trying to print the string,
I can see I'm in an endless loop. The string keeps being printed.

What's the matter here? My best guess is the become: method is being used
when the code is compiled.

Hi merchtemeagle,

IIRC, the #become: method is not "used". It's infact inlined in the VM, and the Smalltalk code you see is never called as such. By modifying the method you maybe created some infinite loop, that stops the VM inlined code from being called. I'm not 100% sure of my explanation But I guess it's something like this.

If you have more questions on VisualWorks and Smalltalk, you might want to look into the google groups : comp.language.smalltalk
You can also come on irc.parcplace.net , channel #smalltalk .

HTH,

Yann

Indeed, I asked the same question in that group.

Thanks for your reply however.
